The mountain gorilla exists in small pockets in the mountains of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo. Their numbers have dwindled substantially, and thanks to ecotourism their population is stable. In spite of their fierce appearance they are vegetarians, and peaceful unless the silverback feels threatened. This is rare since the conservationists and national park guides that study and protect them from poachers help ensure a peaceful existence with outsiders.
