The word orangutan means “man of the forest” in Indonesian. The red ape, as it is sometimes called, is the largest arboreal great ape, and prefers to spend most of its time alone high in the tree canopy eating mostly fruit. Serious rainforest degradation due to palm trees has diminished its territory throughout most of Borneo and Sumatra, and our distant cousin is in danger of extinction.
