Arctic Wildlife Teaser

Svalbard Island –  600 miles south of the North Pole

Dr. P just returned from a 10 day expedition trip in the high Arctic of Svalbard. This page has a smattering of the wildlife he saw. There will be more posts about what it is like to go on this trip logistically, the awesome guides, and more details on each of these species, at a later time.

Polar bear walking amongst walrus

Our first polar bear walked amongst the walrus looking for an easy meal, and found none

It walked along the rocks with icebergs floating around it

He swam right past us to a small island one hundred yards away. So as not to interfere we stayed 100 yards away from him, and Dr. P used the Canon RF 100-500 mm lens set to 500 mm to take this photo.

This different polar bear is having whale meat for lunch. He is well-fed, as attested to by his sagging belly!

He gave us a quick glance at us in our zodiacs and went back to eating

Walrus on beach eyeing us.

Our guides knew of a beach where the walrus are somewhat approachable

Some of them came up close as we sat on the beach photographing them

Some got even closer!

We even saw a pillow walrus!

They rested displaying their velvety antlers as we walked past them

One of them decided it is time for some seafood

Dr. P was in this same location in April of 2023 on a snowmobile trip. It was nice to compare the two different seasons.
